I joined Twitter late in 2008, and remember trying to get people to signup and explaining why it was worth the effort. Engagement was low, follower counts were low, but the community was tight. You knew if someone was on the platform.
NOSTR feels like that today. Early, fun, and the pressure for engagement almost non existent.
