Let's take this conversation for example, the only reason it needs to be on relays (few and centralised and will keep getting more centralised with scale) is because:
1. You were not following me.
2. It is expensive to go read all your friends RSS feeds on client side (but not really).
#2 is an inconsequential optimization and it is OK to be centralised.
#1 could have been done with good old URL aggregators, like RSS aggregators or Reddit, it is OK for these to be centralised.
But as soon as you found something you want to engage with, we are now in the realm of email.
Now what are the problems with email that haven't been solved before? I claim ; Credible Exit.
If Email addresses were Public keys, why wouldn't we be having this conversation over Email instead of using Nostr relays?
Note, I am talking about Email as an architecture, not saying I love the spec or format. You could replace Email with Matrix or Simplex doesn't matter.
