The quality of their products is another factor (sure I use neovim most of the time, but when I want to run some test coverage, debug or do more advanced static analysis nothing can beat JetBrains stuff).
Anyway, for software I (sometimes) kind of get the point. But for hardware, the business model has always been different: you wanna increase your revenue? You sell more items. If I purchase a physical copy of your product, then that item belongs to me forever the moment I pay for it, period. But that of course means that the company behind needs to keep reinvesting and innovating if it wants people to keep buying its products. And sitting on their asses while money keeps flowing in for free is of course a much more compelling option. But all forms of capitalism that exploit rent are deeply flawed and heavily skewed towards the producer rather than the consumer.
