I guess one of the comments asking for clarity resonated. I have no idea what the OP was talking about when they said to not use turns of phrase. After reading further, it sounds like some used a problematic idiom but that's unclear from the initial post.
Being respectful is good. Making light of sexual harassment is bad. I'm positive that wink emoji was used to harass a woman based on the kinds of people defending it
But a unanimous letter issued by a steering committee putting out warnings shouldn't be making vague allusions so overly broad that context is indecipherable thus making compliance impossible. Without those comments, it could easily be read as a ban on bringing up Star Trek references because not every maintainer is a nerd.
