One thing I remain astonished about is that the House of Lords functions.
Given most of the Lords these days are people appointed by imbecilic former Prime Ministers, it shouldn't work. It should be politicised to the point that it's just an extension of whoever was last in power.
But the people elected to the Lords generally seem to take the role of Upper House seriously. There are a few dickheads of course but by and large they try to ensure the Commons acts lawfully and all that good stuff.
Surely it couldn't be that, being awarded financial security and social standing for life, Peers actually feel free to follow their consciences and contribute to society properly? It can't be that, because as we all know, people given a guaranteed income and social standing would just blow it all on drugs and wide-screen TVs and become lazy benefits cheats /s
Yes, this was about UBI, about the welfare state, and about the inherent goodness of humanity if freed from coercive and abusive systems.
