Kind of halfway "fixed" my laptop. Turns out, you can just turn down the power given to a CPU. That reduced the heat, and my borked fan isn't whining anymore. Still ought to replace it, though, but that's not all. It also turns out this thing shipped with a defective HD, which works, but puts out way way wayyyyy more heat than it's supposed to. So... Actually fixing this will be more expensive than anticipated. But I've learned a lot just from taking this cover off and identifying all the (err, some) parts.
