Nope. The map is not the territory, just like バツ子(旅行モード (nprofile…n64p) said about "people not understanding that their world models are not the world itself". Their self/ego model isn't either.

One of the classic metaphors for this is the "divine scribe" (Hermes, Thoth, Sarasvati, etc). If you imagine your self as a collection of memory engrams stored in the brain, then it's functionally analogous to a book with your entire life history written down on it's pages. But someone is flipping back and forth through the pages, writing in the margins, choosing what comes next in the story, etc. That's the hand holding the stylus. Either that or we are a self-writing book. But in any case, transcending self/ego is as simple as a recognition that this immaterial liminal thing, our ability to choose what's next, is formless until that choice is made and the words are written down. In effect, the *true* self is not simply the sum total of all our descriptions of it up to the present, but something else which is as yet unmanifest.
