We have 3/4t truck with Diesel engine to tow our large and heavy travel trailer; to safely do this you [perhaps unfortunately] actually need a beefy truck.
Yes, people used to tow long trailers even with cars in the past, but those trailers where much lighter and the cars much less safe than today.
