Doctors are constantly moving between wards. Nurses often need them for a very quick (1-2 minute) task such as writing a prescription, approving putting someone on a drip, or okaying someone being discharged. I routinely saw this take hours, which led to people waiting for beds to become available.

They have an IM platform but you can’t receive messages until you log in at a desktop (not a bad idea, prevents people losing handheld machines with confidential medical data on them, or getting infected fluids on them). Doctors often have hours of activity when they can’t check these messages.

Hiring some administrators to read messages for doctors, prioritise them, and schedule time for replying would improve things hugely. If the ward I was on is representative, it would be the equivalent of adding 10% more beds, simply as a result of being able to discharge people without long waits (often most of a day) for a final sign-off.
