I think the first time I really truly heard it and loved it was while watching the movie "La Bamba" about Ritchie Valens (who later died with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper in a plane crash together). The plane's name was "Miss American Pie." The incident ITSELF got made into a song to honor them and their death.
