I suspect that Zelenskyy knew very well what he was walking into. He was going to be used by Trump and Vance in a way that gave them public cover for their withdrawal of support. But that was always going to happen. So Zelenskyy's audience was his own people.

He gave them what they needed: an embodied display of the fact that Ukraine will not grovel or lie down to fascists.

He didn't 'blow' it, as Ryan Evans claims, because it was already blown - months ago.
