I’ve been cooking long weekend dinners for my family for many years. In recent years, the gatherings are smaller as people are more spread out and centred in their own homes. But this weekend, I did a dinner for the 5 of us that live here. I had to do a big traditional turkey dinner that was gluten free, dairy free and soy free because my daughter has developed some serious food intolerances. I used gf bread, gf sausage and bouillon (Better Than Bouillon brand) in the stuffing. Did not spread anything on top of the turkey (which was ridiculously huge from a small farm setting) I roasted it upside down to keep it moist on the up side. I made mashed potatoes (from our garden root cellar) with oat milk. Broccoli roasted from frozen. Locally grown cranberries that I had dried earlier this month, re-hydrated, and simmered with organic cane sugar for an hour, then blended and thickened with cornstarch.
“Pumpkin” pies were made from a Blue Hokkaido squash I grew, the gf pie with oat milk, eggs from the hens, and a bought gf crust served with whipped coconut cream. I also made a conventional pie for the rest of us.

No one felt deprived of anything. It was a very good dinner. I am thankful for still being able to make food for my family from mostly local and small farmed produce that I have preserved here at home. Having my 4 yr old grandson sitting at the table eating fresh healthy food that his gran cooked and having him watch this family dynamic as we cook, eat and talk together about all the things. More precious that gold.
