I think part of the problem is that way too many people simply don't understand politics.
There will never (in our lifetime anyway) be a long term politician who always makes the best choice for society.
Why? Because they wouldn't get voted in the first time they made a stand on what is right, BEFORE the VOTERS, think it's the right thing to do.
The reason 'left wing' politicians seem similar to right wing ones is because VOTERS have made it clear they will support right wing policies.
Why in the world would ANY politician follow, or care about the needs or wants of those who don't vote?
Answer is... They wouldn't. At least not do it and win.
If people consistently voted in the 'left' direction, politicians would ALL shift to the left, because that's where the votes would be.
But they don't, do they?
WE, the voters (and non-voters by choice), show them what is acceptable by what we support.
When we bounce back and forth, whether by voting or not voting, we teach them
