We officially just wrapped up the third coldest January on record at South Pole Station and are rapidly approaching station closure in a couple weeks. Why do we close the station in February? In short, it becomes just too cold to fly the LC-130s and KBA Basler DC-3s that supply us until winter weather starts to tail off in September.
