My thoughts are that if you were to validate a PoS chain from the first block, keeping track of account stakes and token balances, it should be possible to determine that the longest chain of blocks if valid. This is a more involved process than in PoW, where you just have to check the block headers. To propose alternative histories in PoS, the validators up to that point would have to collude, or their keys have to be compromised
