I hope that the rate at which young voters went for Trump puts a nail in the coffin of the "the next generation will save us" narratives.
There isn't a world in which young people automatically have good politics or act competently in regards to politics, because that's not how skills or knowledge works. It's an absurd and frankly cruel burden to heap on the shoulders of young people, and it's dangerously ahitorical. The truth is that reactionary movements have almost always relied on youth buy-in, especially to fill the ranks of their street fighters and activists. Missionary work is for the young, brown shirts tended to be young, the forces of reaction can stir up youth sentiment too. Fascists promise change, and they tell young people that they can deliver world-saving change by going fascist; the fascists take the same messaging as progressives in many ways, but bend it towards themselves. And in the absence of a functioning alternative, many young people will go fascist.
