My 8 year old found a piece of old piece of countertop on the playground at school. She and her friend made plans to make a something out of it. Some boys came and took it away from them.
Did she cry? No. Did she fight them? No. Did she make a plea to the authorities? No.
She and her friend hatched a plan. There was a piece of granite countertop under the deck of the house we live in. A sample from a previous remodel. That one wasn’t as important to her as the one at school. She negotiated a trade with the boys and got a sign off from her teacher, her friend and us yesterday. Today I dropped her off at school with a 10 lb slab of granite to trade for the one she and her friend want back.
I told her “when goods and services don’t cross boarders, soldiers do” and explained what that meant and how proud I am of the solution she found. I told her war is the worst thing people do and that by trading freely with others we disincentivize war. She said “so is trade the opposite of war? Is it the best thing people do?”
The kids gunna be alright! I’m so damn proud of her.
