Looking back at my life and career, I'm pretty sure I had opportunities offered to me simply because I looked like what those in charge expected applicants to look like. I looked like a TV version of a first-year middle school math teacher while the other applicants didn't. I fit the stereotype, so I always had an edge compared to others. I didn't cause it, but I benefitted from it. That's institutional racism.
