TL;DR: Why nostr beats twitter (for bitcoin discourse)
The main problem with Twitter is audience capture. To grow and sustain an audience, you must continuously feed the algo beast.
This means pandering and engagement-baiting.
It’s debatable if this produces ‘good’ discourse in any subculture, but for some the stakes aren’t that high. Influencoors posting low-effort bait doesn’t matter than much for, like, Disney-Twitter
But for Bitcoin Twitter it’s a problem.
Because it elevates a certain type of posting, and therefore a certain type of poster, and therefore a certain type of discourse
The Twittershill posting style is that of a preacher. It’s preaching a doctrine of SICKNESS and then selling the CURE
This means that these ‘Priestly’ types get elevated to the highest positions of influence in the community
And then Bitcoin discourse becomes narrow, religious, priestly discourse
We all know that Bitcoin fixes Fiat. But the unceasing, relentless focus on this DISEASE-CURE framing traps the discourse, and it gets recursively narrower and narrower
I don’t think we need to eliminate it. I don’t even think Bitcoin needs to be ‘less toxic’ necessarily
But what has to change, is the ‘Priest caste’ in Bitcoin crowding out other discourse
To onboard another billion bitcoiners we need NEW memes and NEW ideas and the space to experiment with them
I don’t think that’s possible with Twitter
But I think it might be here
