One of my favorite things about the internet are freelance historians: people who pick some neglected aspect of culture or technology and then obsessively research and document it.
Some of it is goofy, some of it is consequential. But even if it's a taxonomy of pencil sharpeners, it can give you a better sense of bygone days than a "real" history book would.
