I got impatient and opened the thing up a bit before going to the hackerspace.
I found out why the USB charger doesn't work. Thankfully just looks like a mechanical issue and I can just solder on a new one. No melted chips in the area.
In terms of storage options, I can either put an NVME in the WWAN slot or a NVME in the HDD caddy, which currently contains a 128gb SATA SSD. I'm not sure if the caddy is a full NVME port or if there aren't actually the full number of lanes going to it. Probably will look it up.
