In today’s edition of “late-stage capitalism is fucking up the world”: Match, the company behind most of the dating apps in the world, has for years had all the tools and resources to minimize abusive users on their apps (where by “abusive” we mean “folks who rape, drug and abuse their dates”).

It has an extensive database of reports that it could use to prevent someone with reports of abuse from accessing their accounts on any of the apps it owns - or, better, it could even report them to the authorities, since rape is a crime in basically any country in the world.

Yet it allowed some offenders to drug and rape up to 11-12 women, despite countless reports, without blocking their accounts nor reporting them to the police.

Internal slides and memos seem to instruct employees to share data about abuses only when explicitly requested by law enforcement. And, even in those cases, they are instructed to share as little information as possible.

The reason? Well, serial abusers are often loyal paying customers. And blocking them may stall corporate growth.

Companies like these, in an ideal world, should simply be banned from operating because of the unacceptable harm they pose to their own users.

But in a late-stage capitalist world corporate growth always comes before the law - even when we’re literally talking about sexual abuse.
