In a certain city in China, there is a statue commemorating an inhumane incident said to have occurred during the Han Dynasty (approximately 206 BCE to 220 CE).

The inscription on the monument reads:

“To bury his son for the sake of his mother. During the Han Dynasty, there was a man named Guo Ju who lived in poverty with his family, which included his three-year-old son and his elderly mother. With scarce food and limited resources, he struggled to provide for both. To better care for his mother and to ensure she had more food to eat, he made the decision to dig a pit and bury his three-year-old son alive.”

This is presented as part of the Chinese tradition of “filial piety,” a value that Chinese people have long been taught to take pride in. Today, the Chinese Communist Party has erected a monument to commemorate this ancient act, celebrating it as a moral example rather than condemning it. Can you imagine such a story being promoted as a virtue?
