I highly advise against rooting your device as you are completely bypassing the Android security model by doing so. Using a custom ROM and rooting are two totally different things. I don't know if you've ever used Linux before but in Linux you use your standard user for everything except what root is needed for. You do not run as a root all the time and that's for good reason.
