Apparently it's the hotels themselves that get hacked, which makes sense given what I observed when booking direct.
And it's not one big organized crime group, but lots of smaller actors.
When I emailed one of those hotels they were aware that phishing was happening, but did not seem to realize that their own accounts were compromised.
Booking has been handling this very poorly, in terms of prevention, quick communication and reimbursing victims. Not surprised.
It's a Dutch company and they don't even bother showing up for this episode. To make matters worse, they hired some dodgy PR agency which is afraid to speak on camera. This company wants to go bankrupt it seems.
