Since /proc/mdstat gives you a progress bar and is just a regular file, it's pretty easy to expose its contents to the Plan 9 box where I run all the monitoring stuff and pipe it into aux/statusmsg to see it go. Takes up somewhat less space than `watch -n 0.1 cat /proc/mdstat`.
