i've been learning the history of wordpress. after i left userland, i wasn't paying a lot of attention to blogging software.
it was apparently a switch by movable type from free distribution (as in beer) to subscription. this pissed bloggers off (again apparently) and they looked for something that was free, and that's when wordpress became the default blogging platform.
there are real pressures on companies to get cash flow, i've been there too. you have to make payroll. ;-)
