The NHS is allowing transgender men to have their eggs frozen for free despite denying the treatment to millions of women.
Patients born as female who want to live as men can access free egg freezing treatments on the NHS at several trusts.
Yet the health service typically denies fertility treatment to women unless they have had cancer treatment such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which can damage egg production.
The 1.5 million women in Britain who have endometriosis are rarely given free egg freezing treatment despite 50 per cent being likely to have difficulty conceiving.
Individual integrated care boards (ICBs) decide who is eligible to have their eggs frozen on the NHS.
Several of the 42 ICBs across the country indicate that transgender men may be able to receive the treatment for free.
The North Central London ICB’s website states that it will pay for egg freezing for women who have fertility issues after undergoing medical treatment, which it says “may include patients undergoing interventions for gender reassignment”.
Similarly, the North East London ICB says it funds egg freezing for anyone “due to undergo a gonadotoxic treatment”, referring to certain types of chemotherapy. This can include “patients undergoing interventions for gender affirmation”.
Spokesmen for the ICBs said they would also pay for women with endometriosis to have their eggs frozen if their condition is thought likely to lead to infertility.
Identity versus biology
Policy documents produced by the Suffolk and North East Essex ICB and South West London ICB indicate that funding would be given for any NHS treatment which would impact fertility, with the latter indicating that this includes “treatment for gender dysphoria”.
