Machines are tools, and created from human intention. Meaning that wherever there's AI, there's a human behind it with their intentions embued with it.
Can an AI do sophisticated things? Yes, it can and will continually get better, just don't assume its doing anything that "it wants" to do, like we want to do things.
Getting that part unclear is dangerous because an AI can't be guilty, otherwise you're offloading responsibility from the creators/users. Anything an AI does, is because it was programmed or used by someone else for that action. An AI "pursuading" you is someone else pursuading you with extra steps, fuzzing that up means you're opening yourself to be pursuaded and influenced in subtle ways, and you won't be bothered because "the ai was just talking with you". Its like adults having responsibility for their children, the difference is that responsibility doesn't stop for technology.
Now AGI. Taking those points into consideration. Any technology that stops being useful won't be used. Technology depends on its usefulness for its survival, and its usefulness is determined by human values. What that means is that any conversation about AGI is not just about the machine, its about the utility. So therefore, any talk about AGI ultimately must include what humans want, and what it allows us to do.
