The Sparrow - Part Two (A Thread)

The young boy dragged himself home, blanked in the dusky twilight of the day, his weary body and hopeful spirit carrying him through until finally reaching the only home he'd ever known. He entered the dimly lit farmhouse and beheld the captive sparrow, its wings beating desperately against the bars of its prison. A pang of pity welled up within him, a kindling flame of compassion amidst the darkness of his circumstances.

The boy approached the cage, his small fingers trembling as he gently unlatched the door. The sparrow, sensing freedom within its grasp, fluttered out in a graceful display of liberation. To the boys astonishment, as the bird perched upon a windowsill, it began to speak in a voice as delicate as a whisper carried by the wind.

"You showed me charity, for this I will show you mine, for I am a messenger," it revealed, "sent by my master, Death and it is his with that plague and doom upon is brought upon this house. Your act of kindness has spared you; run to the ancient barrows on the outskirts and hide, stay there for three days and nights. Then, on the morning of the fourth day, travel east for ten miles, you will know when you have found your destination. Fore I tell you this, tonight, Death shall claim the lives within this dwelling."

The boy's eyes widened with a mix of fear and resolve, he nodded and whispered his thank you to the sparrow. The boy heeded the sparrow's words, running through the fading light until he reached the ancient barrows. Nestling himself within the embrace of the woodland and hidden by the ancient mounds he settled down an waited.
