Thinking ahead already to the October school holidays. We're going to do some proper long distances in our electric car for the first time, and trying to decide on the best routes to take.

We'll be driving from Sydney to Coonabarabran for StarFest on the long weekend, then continue on to Brisbane to see the relatives for a few days, then drive back to Sydney (with an overnight stop en route) just in time for the end of the holidays.

The main thing I'm trying to work out is whether to take the New England Highway or the Pacific Highway on the way back to Sydney. When we've done that drive in the past we've preferred the New England Highway because while it is a bit further and nominally adds an hour or two to the driving time there's a lot less holiday traffic on that road.

The added consideration this time is that the EV chargers on the Pacific Highway are better, as in faster chargers and more chargers per site. The New England Highway has chargers at reasonable distances apart, but most of them are only 50 kW chargers with just a single CCS2 plug.

So, the faster, more plentiful chargers might shift the journey time difference further in the Pacific Highway's favour. That's unless the school holiday traffic results in queues and long waiting times to use those chargers. But the charger congestion might be even worse on the New England Highway despite there being less holiday traffic because of the slower, less numerous chargers.
