I've heard of a person who was having a similar problem when giving certain types of gun trainings. The solution they came up with was to remove the barrel and firing pin at which point they didn't consider it a gun because it was incapable of being fired. At the same time, it was not clearly a toy, so it had the same psychological effect when it was pointed at someone.
