Have you ever noticed that D&D *rules* often assume an episodic structure with long downtime breaks in between, but D&D *campaigns* (both homebrew and published) are more often continuous epics with very little time to breathe?
This isn't edition-specific, either. Various TSR editions, 3.x, and 5e all have different flavors of assuming parties can and will take several weeks off regularly.
