I believe many of these people still want to be heard and understood by others. Humans are simply social animals, and being rejected in social spheres is detrimental to survival. The brain reads it as dangerous to be shunned, perhaps as a survival mechanism.

Often I stick my foot in my mouth with dark humor, hard to read tone, or venting. Maybe I just want to take part? Be seen?
