WW2. I was a born again/evangelical in the 90s/early 2000s and I remember everyone saying the Jews were God’s chosen people. This view is very recent. Go back to the days of Martin Luther, and many of the early protestants saw the Jews as turning away from the true messiah. Therefore, they were in the state they were often in during the Old Testament where they were disobedient from God and therefore given to their enemies (Babylonian, Assyrians, etc.)

After WW2 and the 1947 UN agreement for the future of Mandatory Palestine, I think the guilt over WW2/Germany led to a lot of Christians adopting for the reformation of Israel. Another aspect is that, for prophecy based evangelicals, they also see the restoration as critical for the rapture/2nd coming of Christ. (at some point, Israel will destroy the Dome and rebuild their temple).
