Six people got arrested in house raids in Toronto this morning for activities related to Palestine solidarity. They had their phones and computers seized.
This is of course scary, but it is important to step forward when repression falls and not back. We need to show our solidarity with those charged while continuing the struggle. It is a good chance to take a look at our security practices though.
Taking action for Palestine? It's a good idea to hide your identity -- masking is a good way to do that, and so is not posting to social media. If you want to communicate about the movement, consider a secure, anonymous platform like North Shore Counter-Info: https://north-shore.info
House raids are hard to deal with, but usually cops are just trying to steal your electronics. Encryption makes this harder for them. Encrypt your phone and use a good password (I see you out there with your swipey lock screen). Keep your phone turned off when you're not using it so the encryption is in place - yes, this might involve getting a watch or an alarm clock. This won't make your data completely safe, but it will take them way more work to get it.
Finally, don't talk to cops! Don't talk to them at demos -- they are not there to support you, don't believe their lying smiles. Don't talk to them if they come to your door - if you are being arrested, all you need to say is name, date of birth, address, and "I want to talk to my lawyer." Otherwise silence is just fine.
If you and your friends are feeling scared, that's understandable. Take a minute to get prepared, and then don't let that fear hold you back.
Soli to all the arrested!
