#BestVidyaGirlContest 2024 Post-Tournament Analysis (Touhou Mini-Qualifier Nominations)
With the US presidential election turning out about as well one could have reasonably hoped, it’s time for me to finally get to work on my recap of this year’s best vidya girl contest – a tournament where you didn’t have to worry about voting for the lesser of two evils, because ALL the girls who qualified were worthy choices! But first, how we got there:
My goal for this nomination process was to ensure a more accurate seeding of the girls, so that you didn’t have two of the strongest girls in the entire field being knocked out as early as round 2, simply because of underseeding and unlucky draws. For that reason, I wanted last year’s 8 strongest girls (based on extrapolated strength) to become the Top 8 Seeds, leading to the following list:
#1: Samus
#2: Touhou rep 1
#3: Tamamo-no-Mae
#4: Pyra
#5: 2B
#6: Touhou rep 2
#7: Ryza
#8: Touhou rep 3
“Touhou rep 1-3”, what the hell does that mean though? Well, another one of my changes for this year’s tournament was a franchise cap, only 3 girls per franchise max. Since Touhou would 100% break that cap (it had 5 girls last year, and that was despite some major snubs), this did pose some obvious issues: If I purely went with last year’s results, I would have Remilia as the #2 Seed, Reimu as the #6 Seed, and Momiji as the #8 Seed – but where would that leave someone like Marisa, who actually BEAT Reimu convincingly in a 2023 bonus match? And with all the weirdness that took place in the second half of the 2023 bracket, could we for sure say that Momiji was stronger than someone like Patchouli?
My solution to all of this was to create a special little mini-qualifier for Touhou, which would also serve to somewhat make up for this series in particular being screwed over by the new franchise cap. The 3 Top Touhous were to be selected through a 10-way poll, where people could vote for as many girls as they wanted (so that for example Remilia wouldn’t be hurt by the presence of multiple other Scarlet Devil Mansion characters). I had already decided on 5 of the girls that would be included in this poll, on the basis of previous strong tournament- or bonus match performances: Remilia, Marisa, Reimu, Momiji and Patchouli.
For the remaining 5 girls, I set up a Nomination Thread to determine which ones would make it in. You could nominate 2 girls, your #1 pick being worth 2 points, while your #2 pick was worth 1 point. Same nomination rules applied as for the main tournament: No fatties, no trannies!
In the end, the following girls would end up qualifying:
Nazrin (7 points)
Flandre Scarlet (5 points)
Youmu Konpaku (5 points)
Tewi Inaba (3 points)
Cirno (3 points)
