Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. Luke 6:47-48 ESV
We may be familiar with this passage, but we miss or fail to accept the context in which Jesus said it. The words He was referring to are blessings and woes, the command to love, help, give, pray, not retaliate against one's enemies, and not harshly judge others including one's enemies. That sounds crazy and foolish. It sounds like bad advice from someone who just doesn't understand how the world works, but those who endeavor to live that way are like a man who built his house on a solid foundation.
