yesterday's attempt at deconvenience was to finally delete the amazon account i had just not been using... or to try and do so.
i used the "close account" link to get an email with a different account closure confirmation link. that account closure confirmation link sent me to a page that said the action could not be completed, and to try again later. i tried again basically hourly all day, and then finally emailed customer support to directly request account closure.
I received a 500 word email in return detailing all of the things (none of which i have or use) i would lose access to by closing my account, and then requesting that i reply to the email if i still wish to close the account.
I replied to the email, and instead of closing the account i received a second identical email signed off by a different customer service rep. i replied to that email as well, and have now received a third identical email from a third customer service rep.
we shall see if they ever permit me to fully close the account!
