This is why I posted this. Cashiers move everything inside the store by hand, one piece at a time. Tons and tons each day.
When I trained cashiers, I informed them they might have to buy new bras because of the muscles in their chest will change shape due to moving so much weight each shift.
Back injuries and carpal tunnel are common, life changing injuries we teach new cashiers how to avoid.
I had to quit my job because I was experiencing the first signs of carpal tunnel which is dropping things because I was loosing the ability to grip things tightly. People think 'it's only one basket, no big deal.' But a cashier may have to empty 10 to 15 baskets per shift. That's 50 to 75 baskets per week. It does damage.
Also, please ask a cashier if they need the heavy item up on the belt. Cases of pop, pet food, etc. Most times there is a code they can punch in or a register gun, rather than straining their backs.
No one should injure their back for minium wage. No one.
