you can disable SSID broadcast on most wireless devices, even android for many versions the hotspot ... iirc... can be set to not advertise the hotspot with a constant beacon (and obviously that will lower power draw
and i think that if you set a WPA/2 key on it, it won't respond and open up the connection without receiving the attempt with the right cipher encoding it
for long life of battery tho, bluetooth would be better, but i don't know if it has a "hidden server" mode like this
