PAs were intended as doctor support, to be trained to do routine procedures, history taking etc. But they are unable to prescribe or order x-rays etc and need to be overseen. The NHS decided to use them to plug rota gaps and overextended their role while they have no regulation. Nurses, pharmacists, physios etc are all regulated and will not overstep for fear of losing registration. Not the PAs fault but being asked to do what they are not trained for.
