I saw some articles about how the current variety of banana grown around the world (Cavendish banana) is at risk of being wiped out by a kind of fungus. The issue is that the bananas are propagated asexually, so they have no genetic diversity - any plant illness that can kill just one can kill them all.
The previous world-dominating variety of banana was the Gros Michel, which was wiped out by the same fungus - Panama disease.
I'd guess that they are using more and more pesticides / additives in order to stave off an inevitable consequence.
