Does freedom of speech extend to bots? I think any reasonable person would say no. Every human being who expresses themselves on social media should have their right to do so protected; no one should stand in the way of freedom of expression and speech.
I believe this 100%. However, it would be naive not to question whether all communication on social media is truly happening between humans. The reason I'm thinking about this is that I realise this freedom of speech could be exploited by an enemy state to destabilise a country using bots.
Since I've started using Nostr more frequently, this concern has become even more prominent. Yes, other social media companies also struggle with bots, and some may even tolerate them because of the increased activity they generate. But with Nostr, it's even more crucial to consider this issue because you can generate multiple identities much faster than on any of these company-owned platforms.
We, the people of Nostr, need to start thinking about how we're going to protect this space to keep it predominantly human—I'd say 98% human—so that I can trust that the person I'm engaging with is another human being. If someone is being mean towards me, I want to know it's just another frustrated person and not some bot designed to frustrate me and make me mistrustful of others, warping my sense of reality and making me feel like the world sucks. Is anybody else thinking about this?
