I’m just really heartbroken I think. Never really been one for celebrity worship or parasocial relationships so I didn’t feel particularly attached to Neil as like a person but his books are/were among my favourites. I have a complete Sandman collection and a signed copy of American Gods among other things, all read multiple times. The Ocean at the End of the Lane unsettled me in a way I can’t quite describe and it conveys the feeling of being a powerless, frightened kid better than anything else I’ve read.

But the nature of the things he’s done undercuts his work entirely. I don’t think I can read these books again and I don’t want to see them on my shelves and that just fucking sucks
