In the spirit of Ray Kurzweil, I have come to conclude that "consciousness" is nothing more than when your internal model of the world aligns nicely with your sensory inputs.

Because there's nothing more disconcerting than misfires on the optical, visual or tactile nerves. And suddenly what you expect to experience is not what you experience.

In the dream state there are no sensory inputs. It's a closed loop. Your inputs are yourself.
