Well, 1200bps will be a little slower than 9600bps ... :-) :-) :-)
This might be a totally different thing, but with the radio modems we use in the DIY drone community, slower speeds means more noise tolerant and hopefully slightly longer range.
Can you only talk to other stations setup on the same baud?
Sounds like a lot more fun than my new fall hobby of weeding buckthorn out of my woods
