Its pretty mind boggling to watch this meltdown. I've been using WordPress more recently and all of this makes me question that decision.
I've summarized this whole event to people that ask like this.
Matt seems to beleive that there is a hidden unwritten requirement to "give back" and his view that his is the moral position has lead him to behave like a spoiled child.
Open Source is about sharing your work with no expectation that isn't in the license. Period.
Matt seems extremely jealous and prideful. He seems to lack the humility to de-escalate his threating and rash actions.
Is it a good thing for companies to financially support open source? Absolutely! It should be in their interests. They should be encouraged to do so by their customers and the community.
That's not what this is. This is coercion and is going to hurt open source if Automattic wins.
You know Matt is moralizing when he asks us to judge the character of WP engine investors vs his. Honesty, it seems like Matt may be having some sort of personal melt down to me and I hope he gets help.
