Here's an article that explains some of troubles with linking these two events but in short Al Biruni was among the first scholars to clarify how Yom Kippur and Ashura are separate and distinct events. And regardless of the veracity of conjuncture the fast was abrogated a year later by the obligation of Ramadan and there remains no tradition of RasulAllah fasting Ashura. And Allah knows best whether there remains any reward in it or not.
