A Pixelfed post from a young person just popped up on my timeline, someone who recently transitioned from Instagram. They used the hashtag #socialmedia, which I follow. Clearly, they're experimenting and seeing if they can interact with new people on their freshly created profile.
I noticed some people explaining the #Fediverse, and I joined in to help out too. In the end, I think the true purpose of the social web should be to connect like-minded individuals while also fostering open dialogue. Whether a person shares photos, ideas, videos, or even the books they’re reading, it’s all about creating space for diverse expression.
This post was a great example of the social web we want—enabled by a hashtag that bridged different platforms. But we could do more to welcome newcomers to the Fediverse, even when they're not using specific hashtags like in this case.
Perhaps a timeline that highlights posts from newcomers could be a good way to help them feel more connected and welcomed? It might make the space feel more social and inclusive for everyone.
